I much prefer improvisation based on a predefined chord structure--such as the &quot;I Got Rhythm&quot; 32- bar chord progression, or a 12-bar blues chord progression-- than I do a free form improvisation with no melody, no rhythm, no harmonic structure. Great improvisers managed to say more musically when confined to those chord progressions than when free to play with no structure or definition at all.]]></description>
