Is there always an act 1 choice? I’m thinking of crime novels as an example where there often isn’t. E.g. where the detective is assigned to the case from the beginning. The end of act 1 is always a big plot point but I’m not sure your definition of a choice always applies.

The Hobbit is such a perfect example of this. Bilbo had to make quite the Choice. 🙂
