I'm not sure where the term originated, but I remember reading about it on Laura Vanderkam's blog. It's an imperfect metaphor between reading and economics, but basically if you're a "supply side" reader, you read a lot only when you have high quality books available. If you're a "demand side" reader, you read no matter what material you have on hand, because you're in the habit of doing so. I think I have "demand side" habits, but I definitely read a lot more when I have a bountiful supply. I've started to build time into my schedule to browse books in the library and in bookstores. If I spend an hour about once a month, it usually yields enough quality reading material for the month.
And thanks so much for being a blog reader! I love getting to know my readers!

What exactly is a Supply Side reader? I've never heard the term before.
And I starred the post in my gmail, as I get your blog posts in my inbox :) I'm looking forward to reading it. Thanks for the heads up!

Sounds like you're a "supply side" reader! Me, too: I always make time for reading, but when I don't really love the books I have on hand, I definitely read less overall.
The post I'm putting up tomorrow on my website, leannesowul(dot)com, might interest you- it's about seasonal goal setting, a re-post from earlier this year. I think it's such an interesting approach to goals and resolutions!

Oooh! That's great the patterns you've noticed. This will be my first intentional goal and vision planning I've ever had with myself. so I'll be on the lookout for my own patterns.
Though, I have realized I'm a spurt reader (and writer). I'll go weeks without reading something, but I'm not sure if I just need a break or if I'm still holding onto the story and characters I just read about.
One of my reading goals is to slow down and just enjoy reading. I anticipate the Next Book. So when I've picked one I really want to read I basically devour it, and then it's over. I want to enjoy reading and not be in some weird competition with myself about how fast I can read a book. Also, fight scenes. When the action of the story picks up so does my reading speed, and I am not a good visualizer so I want to slow down ad really be able to see the scene written in front of me.

Thanks, Tracy! I'm glad it resonated with you. I'm so with you on the seasonal goals. It's hard to map out an entire year, but a season seems manageable, and much less changeable. Plus, you can tailor things to fit the mood of the season- I read more books in the winter and summer, and exercise more in the fall and spring. When I notice patterns like that, it helps me to cut myself slack on the off-seasons.

I love this! With NaNo ending tonight, December is my plan for 2016 month - writing, home + marriage, and personal resolution planning. I'll do big picture goals for all of next year, but I read somewhere once to plan out 3 months at a time because seasons change and so do goals. So, that's what my December looks like :) Saving this article!
