Thank you! I’m currently only a ghostwriter but have been cranking out romance for over a year, up to 100k words/week for a lot of that year, and I’m here to say it’s a lot of work! It takes creativity and an understanding of how people think and feel and relate to each other to create satisfying relationships a reader cares about. It also requires knowledge of the same fundamentals as any other genre: plot, pacing, character development, creating a satisfying arc over the course of the story, not to mention making sure plot holes and loose ends are cleaned up.

And I’m sorry, but sex scenes aren’t easy. Imagine eating massive amounts of chocolate every day. Yeah, at first it would seem great…but after a while, wouldn’t it get old? 😉

I’ve never read romance, but I appreciate everything you’ve said in this post. Growing up reading horror, I’d hear the same thing all the time “Stephen has no talent, his books are all the same, etc.”

For anyone to say that romance writers are at the bottom of the barrel in the literary world, or that their writing is trash, or “not real writing” is simply ignorant. And if anyone wants to argue that point, just show them the money. I’ve met romance writers who make more in one month writing than I’ve made in five years 🙂
