Wow, you were following a thousand blogs? No wonder you felt overwhelmed! I'm only following close to a 100 or so, and it's not possible for me to keep up with everyone's posts all the time either. I especially liked the part about how you said it's important to update blogs regularly. I always appreciate it when bloggers say if they're going to be taking a break from blogging, because then I know that they'll be coming back eventually. But if they disappear for a long time without warning, I'm not sure whether I should keep waiting for them to come back or unfollow their blogs.

Great point! Actually, the social media buttons are on my list of To-Do's for the site so very soon the posts should allow for tweets, FB likes and G+ +1's. Stay tuned!

All great points. One irony is that you're missing step 8: make it easy for readers to link to your blog. I was going to tweet this directly from your page, but there's no tweet button for the post, just the general follow button.

I just pulled up my blog while reading this article and reviewed it while going through all seven steps. These are some great tips. I tend to center my blog around writing, but I also like a lot of diversity and often write reflections, articles about college life and food, etc. I think one of the most challenging parts of blogging for me is actually coming up with interesting, informative titles. I've always been terrible with titles! They are so important to an online article, though. Titles and visuals are the first things a reader sees in an online article and play a huge role in determining whether or not that person decides to actually read the article or not.

Too many labels is another possible setback of a blog's sidebar--it's too cluttered and thus the search function of labels is rendered rather useless because there are just SO many. I am totally guilty of this and have been trying to limit the number of labels I have per blog post - such as using labels that identify the main themes of the blog post, like "writing," "food," and "fashion."
